INNOVATIONS II - COLLABORATION ON THE ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH

SPATIAL ANALYSIS IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL EPIDEMIOLOGY

4 DAY SHORT COURSE

5- 8th SEPTEMBER 2005, CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA

This four-day short course will provide training in public health research methods for spatial and temporal analysis, particularly in the field of Environmental Epidemiology. There is a strong focus on the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The course aims to improve participants’ language and software skills to enable them to better liaise with geographic information systems (GIS) experts, and to enhance communication between the public health sector and GIS Practitioners.

COURSE CONTENT -

The course will consist of a series of daily lectures from the course leader Professor David Briggs, supplemented with invited lectures from a wide range of experts. The lectures will be supplemented with software demonstrations and moderated discussion sessions.

TOPICS COVERED -

• Introduction to GIS: what do they offer • Obtaining and linking spatial data • Mapping, visualisation & interpolation with GIS • Modelling with point locations • Space-time exposure assessment • Presentation of data for policy and strategic planning • Case studies in spatial epidemiology • Discussions on the value of competing methods

REGISTRATION -

Full 4 day short course $1200 Students $950 Early bird $1100 if you register before Friday 29th July.
The registration form is available on the reverse side of this flyer.

AUSPICE -

This short course is part of a National Collaborative Program on the Atmospheric Environment and Health, funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

The main collaborative institutions are:
- National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, The Australian National University;
- School of Public Health, The University of Sydney & NSW Health;
- CSIRO Atmospheric Research;
- and the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The short course is aimed at professionals and postgraduate students in the fields of environmental health, geography, epidemiology and biostatistics. There is no prerequisite knowledge, but those with a basic knowledge of statistics and some experience in epidemiology will benefit most from the course.

COURSE LEADER -

David Briggs is a Professor of Environment and Health Science, Imperial College London. He leads a Geographic Information Systems group in the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit. He is lead researcher on wide range of projects on environmental health, specialising in Geographic Information Systems applications for exposure assessment, environmental modelling and environmental policy support.

CONTRIBUTORS -

Graeme Hugo is a Federation Fellow, Professor of the Department of Geographical and Environmental Studies and Director of the National Centre for Social Applications of Geographic Information Systems at the University of Adelaide. His expertise is in population issues in Australia and South East Asia, especially migration.

John Glover is Director of the Public Health Information Development Unit at the University of Adelaide. He is the author of social health atlases, presenting data at a small area level to monitor and describe social inequality and its impact on the health of population groups.

Michael Hutchinson is Professor and Acting Director, Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies (CRES), Australian National University. His techniques for spatial analysis and modelling of topography and climate are recognised world-wide. They are used to assess the impacts of projected climate change by the world’s leading climate research institions. He was an invited contributor to IGBP synthesis 1998-2003.

Geoff Morgan is an environmental epidemiologist with the Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health, Sydney University. His current research includes: spatial methods to assess the effects of environmental exposure on health using routinely collected health, environment and socio-demographic data; the health effects of air pollution in Sydney; and environmental factors associated with Ross River Virus episodes in the Northern Rivers Area of NSW.

Clive Sabel is a Senior Lecturer in GIS and Spatial Analysis at the University of Canterbury, NZ. He teaches Geographic Information Science, Advanced Spatial Analysis and Research Methods in Geography, and has written extensively on spatial epidemiology, particularly spatial disease clustering.

Linda Beale is a postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Imperial College, London, UK. Linda's research involves the development and programming of GIS applications that model the interaction between people and the environment. In particular, her work has focused on developing integrated GIS solutions to analyse and map spatio-temporal patterns of human health in relation to environmental risk.
