Further Information about Canberra

The name “Canberra” is derived from the Aboriginal word for ‘meeting place’. As the nation’s capital, Canberra is home to institutions such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the High Court of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia and the National Museum. It is a beautiful well-planned city also known as ‘the Bush Capital’ thanks to the abundant parks and native bush reserves that exist throughout.

Canberra has a lively arts and café scene and is blessed with a multitude of restaurants to suit all tastes, from great pub food to Asian, Mediterranean and modern Australian cuisine. There are a number of award-winning boutique cold climate wineries within a 30 minute drive of the city.

Excellent bike paths and the proximity of so many important buildings to Lake Burley Griffin in the centre of Canberra, make bike riding around this area a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. Hot air balloon enthusiasts appreciate the clean, clear skies, and vistas like that pictured above are not uncommon, especially during spring and autumn.

Canberra has four distinct seasons – warm to hot summers, crisp blue sky winters, colourful spring-times and mild golden autumns.

Transport around the ANU

The ANU campus is quite large (145 hectares), with in excess of 150 buildings, so we strongly suggest that you are conscious of where on the campus you would like to go before arriving. Detailed maps of the ANU campus can be found at: http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/

In the spirit of conducting environmentally aware meetings and events we encourage the use of public and self-powered forms of transport. Please see http://transport.anu.edu.au/ for details of bus routes and suggested bike paths.

* ACTION bus services: Canberra's public buses are based around Canberra's town centre bus interchanges. ANU is centrally located for services traveling to and from both the City and Belconnen. Most services start around 6:00 am and finish by about 11:30pm. Route# 34 travels through the ANU campus per the attached map. To identify a bus stop look for a concrete bus shelter, a yellow bus peg or a bus pole advertising the ACTION Bus Service. You can catch a bus from any bus interchange or from any bus stop along the bus route by signaling the drive.

For any additional information see: http://transport.anu.edu.au/Catching_the_Bus/
or call the ACTION Customer Service Centre on 13 17 10 or visit www.action.act.gov.au

* Cycling around the campus is also encouraged and very popular amongst staff and students. All paths on campus are shared paths, for both cyclists and pedestrians, and don't forget a helmet. See: http://transport.anu.edu.au/Cycling/

* We encourage walking if you are staying on or near campus, Canberra and the ANU are very picturesque. It is around a 10 minute (≈1km) walk to the city centre from the ANU. See: http://transport.anu.edu.au/Walking/
