DEMOGRAPHY

Demography at NCEPH is concerned with health-related population change and differentials, and their intersection with environmental and socioeconomic factors.

Both survey and anthropological approaches are being employed to study such topics as differential health levels in Asian urban areas, the social and behavioural context of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the determinants of low and declining fertility and fertility differentials in Australia.

A broad interest exists in mortality levels, patterns, trends and differentials in Australia and elsewhere, and in the overlapping fields of reproductive health, and maternal and child health, in developing countries.

NCEPH has also hosted a long-term study of the mechanisms of the demographic transition (the continuing transformation of the world from a situation of high birth and death rates to low rates), this transition having been described as the major event of contemporary social history.
