EPIDEMIOLOGY

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health events in populations. Health events can include diseases, episodes of unwellness, use of health services, or actions taken to avoid illness and improve wellbeing.

The epidemiology program at NCEPH includes:

Improving the understanding of causal pathways in diseases such as

Ophthalmic (eye) conditions
Cardiovascular disease
Childhood asthma
Multiple Sclerosis
Postnatal depression;

Health services research such as

Quality of life and health service utilisation in palliative medicine
Quality of life and health services utilisation in neck and upper body disorders; and.

Environmental/social epidemiology including

Disinfection by-products in drinking water and bladder micronuclei
Arsenic in Bangladesh
Defining and quantifying the health effects associated with climate change
Biomarkers of socioeconomic disadvantage Nutritional factors in disease.

NCEPH's range of epidemiology projects, together with expertise in related disciplines, enhances the teaching epidemiology through introductory and advanced coursework and thesis supervision to PhD, DrPH, MPH and GDPH level students.
