The National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health is pleased to offer this short course in Spatial Analysis. The course will comprise a mix of lectures, practical demonstrations, small-group discussion sessions and plenary discussions.
Aims and Objectives
The overall aims of the course are to introduce participants to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the analysis of spatial patterns in health, and their relationships with social and environmental determinants.
Key objectives will be:
- To outline the range of GIS-based methods that can find application in such studies;
- To demonstrate how to apply the methods, in different situations, using real-world data sets;
- To discuss the relative strengths, potential, weaknesses and limitations of these and other methods of spatial data analysis and modelling, in the context of social and environmental epidemiology;
- To give participants an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas on their own work in this field, and get advice on how to make use of some of the methods discussed in the course.

The following are comments from evaluations of the previous NCEPH course in Spatial Methods taught in 2005:
'Expectations were exceeded.'
'This has widened my perceptions of GIS and its applications. It has been valuable and extremely interesting but less relevant to my current work.'
'Taught at exactly the right level, building up from basics to more complicated concepts. David was a brilliant teacher.'
'Great lecture by Linda!'
'Clear explanations, a good variety of speakers, enjoyed Linda's demonstrations.'
'The course went over the basics and did not assume knowledge. English speakers especially David Briggs and Clive were fantastic.'
