The Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) is the only Australian masters program that gives full time practical training.

This unique postgraduate program of study and learning-by-doing is modelled on the U.S. CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service training program. It was conceived to address the lack of trained epidemiologists in the surveillance and control of communicable diseases in Australia. At the inaugural meeting of the Australian Epidemiological Association in 1986, disease control activities were described as “fragmented, inadequate and poorly coordinated”, and in need of reform. In 1990, Australia implemented a range of strategies to enhance the surveillance and control of infectious diseases. Central to these strategies was the formation of the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia and New Zealand, and the intake of the first cohort of scholars into the MAE Program at NCEPH.

The Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) is a challenging hands-on program which develops high level expertise in applying epidemiological methods to outbreak investigation, surveillance and disease control. This type of learning-by-doing or ‘shoe-leather’ epidemiology is based on real problems as they are encountered in the course of day-to-day activities. The major goal of the program is to train health professionals in the practical applications of epidemiologic methods to public health. The MAE Program has twice been nominated for the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
