SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PhD RESEARCH

PhD Scholarships are now available for study into the following research topics:

A number of NCEPH scholarships are also available to undertake research on a variety of important social and environmental issues related to population health within the Centre's main research themes.

Overseas candidates may apply for ANU scholarships (stipend only), and Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) (fees only), or may apply under various scholarship schemes administered by the Australian Government through AusAID.

Domestic scholarships include the Australian Postgraduate Awards, University Research Scholarships, NHMRC Medical Scholarships and various awards administered by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.


OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

Baume Travelling Scholarship
The Baume Travelling Scholarship is intended to assist a currently enrolled, full-time student at NCEPH to travel to a national or international conference in pursuit of the student's academic goals.Funds for the scholarship come from an endowment made to ANU by Emeritus Professor Peter Baume, AO, Chancellor of the University. This scholarship is open to all currently enrolled, full-time students at NCEPH however, in alternate years (beginning in 2004), only Indigenous Australian students will be eligible to apply. One scholarship will be awarded each year.

NCEPH Honours Scholarships
NCEPH awards a number of Honours Scholarships each year. The scholarship program is conducted jointly by arrangement between NCEPH and the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Economics and Commerce, and Faculty of Science. Each scholarship is worth up to $A5, 000. There is an additional allowance of $A4, 500 for those successful applicants who have transferred their enrolment to this University for the Honours Year. Leonard Broom Scholarships
These scholarships were established by the University from funds endowed by Emeritus Professor Leonard Broom to support programs at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health to serve Indigenous Australians. One or more may be awarded each year. The Scholarships are intended to enable Indigenous Australian students to undertake a program of study in an area related to NCEPH's research. Each scholarship will be up to the value of $5,000. There will be an additional allowance of up to $1,000 for reimbursement of travel and fieldwork expenses, if required.

Applicants must be Indigenous Australian citizens and meet the following criteria:

(a) They must either be students currently enrolled or previously enrolled at this University or another Australian university and are intending to undertake fourth year honours in an approved field leading to the degree of bachelor at this University; or
(b) They must be students currently enrolled or previously enrolled at this University or another Australian university and are intending to undertake a program in an approved field leading to the award of postgraduate diploma; or
(c) are students intending to undertake a Summer Research Project at NCEPH.

Duguid Travelling Scholarship
The Duguid Travelling Scholarship was established to assist an Indigenous Australian student to travel to a national or international conference or to come to NCEPH for an approved visit or program of study.

The scholarship is funded from an endowment made in 2002 to The Australian National University's Endowment for Excellence by Dr Andrew Duguid and Mrs Rosemary Douglas, to recognise the contribution made by their late parents, Charles and Phyllis Duguid, who spent much of their lives working for the advancement of Australia 's Aboriginal population.

To be eligible to apply you must be an Indigenous Australian student currently enrolled at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, or an Indigenous Australian person wishing to come to the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health to undertake an approved visit or program of study.

A selection committee drawn from NCEPH academic staff will consider applications and make a recommendation to the Director, NCEPH. The Committee will take into account the following criteria for selection:

  • The academic merit of the proposal
  • The benefit of the proposal to the individual
  • The benefit of the proposal to NCEPH
