Multiple sclerosis.
This set of epidemiological studies aims to examine the effect of environmental factors on the development of multiple sclerosis. We have a particular interest in vitamin D, sun exposure, viral infections, smoking, occupational exposures, and how associations with each of these factors could be modified by genetic factors.

Ausimmune Study
A multi-centre case control study in Brisbane, Newcastle, Geelong and the Western Districts of Victoria, and Tasmania) recruiting individuals with a first clinical diagnosis of central nervous system demyelination and age and sex-matched controls. We recently showed that higher sun exposure and vitamin D status independently decreased the risk of being a case.

A cohort study following the Ausimmune case group to 5 years from initial study interview, to examine risk factors for progression from initial symptoms to diagnosed MS.

AusUVI study
A two-centre clinical trial of the effect of natural levels of solar ultraviolet radiation exposure on the immune response to vaccination with a novel antigen. Ultraviolet radiation exposure is being measured with the use of innovative digital dosimeters worn on the wrist.
