Methods for population health research
Research Methods
One of NCEPH’s hallmarks is that our research employs a range of methodologies and epistemologies. Some of our methodological strengths are discipline-based, including
- epidemiology: randomised controlled trials, cohort studies and case-control studies
- mathematics: quantitative disease modelling and statistical analysis of health studies
- sociology and anthropology: qualitative research
- demography: census analysis, demographic and health surveys.
Many of our investigations address major population health problems by synthesis of a range of disciplinary and stakeholder perspectives, with such integrated research also informing policy and practice change. This is another of NCEPH’s fortes and has led to the development of a new discipline – Integration and Implementation Sciences.

Courses
NCEPH runs courses to provide skills in a variety of methods.
Seminars
Methods-related seminars are generally held on Tuesdays from 12.30-1.30 in the Bob Douglas Lecture Theatre. There is also an annual methods seminar series on a particular topic. In 2010 it was Making a Difference: Lessons from Research Influence on Policy. In 2011 it will be Methods Innovations. This series will run from July 26 to September 6.
