Professor Hilary Bambrick, Director of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University (ANU), has been appointed as member of the Climate and Health Expert Advisory Group.

Director’s welcome

The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) has always been known for its diverse and ground-breaking research, from Jack Caldwell’s pioneering research on HIV/AIDS, Tony McMichael’s global leadership on climate change, and Aileen Plant’s foundational work for an Australian communicable disease program.

This impact continues today through research leadership in globally relevant, complex challenges that arise from social, environmental and commercial determinants, such as tobacco control and e-cigarettes, the extent and consequences of racism, health economics and health systems, mathematical modelling of communicable diseases, and in population mental health.

In addition to driving impact through research, NCEPH offers postgraduate degrees in Public Health as well as Australia’s only field epidemiology training program, the Master of Philosophy in Applied Epidemiology (MAE). This is an immersive place-based program with students placed in Australia and throughout the ASEAN region, which for more than 30 years has produced public health leaders throughout the world.

NCEPH is also known for delivering quality bespoke professional education in the form of short courses to government, often co-designed and to meet identified needs. It also offers additional fee-for-service consulting capabilities for government and non-government organisations seeking specific expertise.

NCEPH provides expertise in pandemic prevention and response. For example, as a trusted expert partner, we were a source of major policy advice for government with the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic and contributed to the workforce surge capacity required through government secondments of staff and MAE graduates and students.
