Health planners and policy-makers face complex decisions that require a deep knowledge of healthcare systems. In this talk, we outline how visual analytics can overcome the challenge of extracting coherent and actionable knowledge from complex healthcare systems. In this context, we will present the outcomes from our work supported by the Excellence in Population Health Research Award. This includes our evaluation of the needs of healthcare systems experts, planners, and policymakers for their complex data analysis and decision support, and the development and application of a visual analytics tool based on the Growing Hierarchical Self-Organising Map , a machine learning algorithm for hierarchical pattern analysis, built to address these needs.
