Abstract

By 2050, around 1 in 5 of the world's population will be aged 60 and over. Although high income countries have been the first places to experience ‘population ageing’, the fastest increase in numbers of older people in coming years will be in low and middle income countries. This will lead to a change of priorities for communities and policy-makers, with an increased focus in management of chronic diseases, disability and needs for care. During this talk, the research agenda of the 10/66 Dementia Research Group will be presented, predominantly focusing on the population-based surveys of older people that we have carried out in nine low and middle-income countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, India, China and Nigeria). The epidemiology of common mental disorders across the different sites will be discussed during the presentation, also covering their relationship with dementia, disability and mortality. The latter part of the talk will highlight the issue of care-dependence and present some of the new 10/66 initiatives aiming to understand the implications and issues related to care in older age.

Dr Matthew Prina is an MRC population health scientist research fellow based within the Centre for Global Mental Health, King's College, London. He is visiting CRAHW and CEPAR from the 15 February to 22 April 2016.
