Good News

Gabriele Bammer was the invited keynote speaker at the Science Europe annual symposium in Brussels on November 21. Her topic was “Improving interdisciplinarity needs three break-throughs” and addressed issues relevant to funding interdisciplinary research. Science Europe is a consortium of European funding agencies, along with some key non-university research organisations (eg Max Plank Institute etc).

Gabriele Bammer was one of 12 successful applicants (out of 172) for a Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany in 2019.

Research impact

November was an active month for progressing the development of an influential group of leaders of inter- and trans- disciplinary organisations. Gabriele Bammer participated remotely  in two meeting in the US, which followed up on the successful meeting in March which she co-organised and co-hosted. The first meeting, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, progressed the development of a network of organisations focused on sustainability. The second meeting at Santa Fe Institute focused on writing a peer-reviewed article based on the discussions at the March meeting. Planning for a May 2019 meeting of organisational leaders in the Oceania region was also advanced.

Education

Gabriele Bammer ran a masterclass on “What expertise do you need to be an excellent interdisciplinary researcher?” at “Six events for good conversations and good food” organised by RegNet, The School of Regulation and Global Governance at ANU on November 13.

Publications

November contributions to the i2Insights blog (http://i2Insights.org) covered measures of social impact; three hidden but crucial elements for influencing government policy; skilful conversations for integration; and transforming transdisciplinarity by interweaving the philosophical with the pragmatic to move beyond either/or thinking.
