Learning from global experts with the Duguid scholarship

This Duguid Travelling Award report is written by Tamara Riley, Research Fellow within Yardhura Walani —the National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research. A veterinarian and an epidemiologist, she conducts interdisciplinary research focusing on the implications of One Health (the relationship between animal, human and environmental health) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Duguid Scholarship assisted me in attending the Advanced Course in Epidemiological Analysis at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, in September 2023.
The course has been running for over 30 years and is aimed at early career researchers and health professionals, and assists participants in developing and building skills in undertaking epidemiological analysis within public health.
There were around 50 participants attending the course from around the world, bringing a variety of experiences and diverse backgrounds to discussions.
The course was facilitated by epidemiology and statistics academics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

This course involved lectures and tutorials in epidemiological analysis to build knowledge of the methods and then implement those skills through practical exercises.
Through this approach, participants were able to adapt the approaches to real-world examples and also have the opportunity to apply the learnings to our own research projects.
This course was helpful in building on my epidemiological analysis skills and knowledge as an early career researcher.
It was also a great opportunity to network with researchers and health professionals working internationally, and explore London through group activities.
