February report for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Modelling

4 February 2019

Good News

Congratulations to Andrea Parisi on submitting her PhD thesis.

The Indo Pacific Centre for Health Security has agreed to fund a Train the Trainer workshop Workshop title:  Strengthening Field Epidemiology Training in the Asia-Pacific through workforce development: A train the trainer’s initiative. Participants will be FETP trainers and mentors in PNG, Solomons, the Pacific, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The Workshop is due to be held in March at NCEPH. This workshop was born from discussions with FETPs in the region at the 9th SE Asian TEPHINET conference in Laos last November. Discussions with program directors and program faculty throughout the Asia-Pacific region and across the globe indicated that one of the greatest challenges to the success of an FETP is the capacity of trainers and mentors.

Conferences, Workshops and Seminars

Danielle Ingle attended the SMBE Satellite Workshop on Genome Evolution in Pathogen Transmission and Disease in Kyoto, where she gave a lightning talk on collaboration with Public Health England about a project on Salmonella Typhi.

Brett Lidbury attended the “7th Annual NHMRC Symposium on Research Translation” (co-hosted with the REWARD Alliance) over the 27 – 28 November, at the University of Sydney. He also attended the 2018 AGM of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) Faculty of Science, Thursday the 29th November at their Surry Hills (NSW) office. An outcome of this meeting was for me to contribute to the expansion of a pathology informatics programme, for the support of College Fellows and Trainees. Also in November, Brett attended the Canberra EViR Funders Forum at the Canberra Office of the NHMRC. This forum is devoted to reducing research waste and improving practice with biomedical, and medical research generally.

Engagement and Outreach

Brett Lidbury hosted a Systematic Review workshop and meetings over the 22 – 23 November with colleagues from SYRCLE, The Department of Health Evidence, Radboud University UMC. Thanks to RSPH staff who attended/supported this visit, and Animal Ethics staff from RSD
