The Centre for Mental Health Research has been recognised for its contribution to improving Canberra community's mental health and wellbeing.

The ACT Mental Health Month award for Research, Evaluation and Quality Improvement was presented to the team by Minister for Mental Health, Shane Rattenbury, on Tuesday.

Mr Rattenbury congratulated award recipients for their significant contributions to people living with mental illness in the ACT and acknowledged their professionalism and skills.

"These awards are a symbol of the community's appreciation for what the recipients have achieved for the general mental health and wellbeing of the Canberra community," Minister Rattenbury said.

CMHR Head, Professor Luis Salvador-Carulla said: "The Centre for Mental Health Research has been the reference mental health research centre in Canberra for the last 44 years.

"Our centre is committed to producing excellent research that will have a positive impact on the mental health of Canberrans."

The centre's research has led to innovative suicide prevention programs in Canberra schools, mapped service availability in the ACT and created tools for practitioners.

Mental Health Community Coalition ACT's Executive Officer, Simon Viereck, said the awards are a positive way to recognise and thank people working to improve the experience of people living with mental health issues.
