Gabriele Bammer has been invited by the International Science Council (ISC) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO to provide a keynote address at the closing webinar in a series preparing for the Ocean Decade that starts in January 2021.

In November the i2Insights blog (http://i2Insights.org) curated by Gabriele Bammer and Peter Deane celebrated its 5^th birthday.

Keynote and invited presentations

Gabriele Bammer was the first external speaker invited to present (online) to the new Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation at the University of Technology, Sydney. The seminar followed-up on the group’s reading of Bammer et al. (2020) on “Expertise in research integration and implementation for tackling complex problems: when is it needed, where can it be found and how can it be strengthened?”.

Outreach and engagement

In November the i2Insights blog (http://i2Insights.org) curated by Gabriele Bammer and Peter Deane celebrated its 5^th birthday and started a new i2Insights Ambassadors program to help expand the reach and impact of the blog. Blog posts were published on effectively leading interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research organisations, the “ABC’s” of interdisciplinarity, navigating paradoxical tensions through both/and thinking and interdisciplinary competencies and innovation.

Gabriele Bammer and Peter Deane produced the November/December i2S News (https://i2s.anu.edu.au/what-i2s/i2s-publications/i2s-news), which featured a collaboration planning tool, qualitative system dynamics maps, Knowledge Management for Development journal, Academy of Transdisciplinary Learning and Advanced Studies (ATLAS) & two conferences Science of Team Science 2021 and 2021 International Transdisciplinarity conference. These have recently been added as resources to the Integration and Implementation Sciences website (https://i2s.anu.edu.au/resources).

Gabriele Bammer supported Kirsty Jones from the Crawford School (and facilitator Wendy Russell) in the delivery of the second of two Knowledge to Action workshops attended by 15 ANU faculty and professional staff. A first workshop was held in October. She has also volunteered to lead a working group on “Rethinking “research impact”: what’s valued, what’s realistic and what the ANU should recognise.”

Gabriele Bammer delivered the fifth (of six) online workshops for the “Interdisciplinary Research Excellence” course that she is teaching in Egypt. She was also actively involved in the Vie-Chancellor’s Courses Steering Committee, which ran a workshop with faculty and submitted a new report on The Future of Learning at ANU to the Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Gabriele Bammer concluded her membership of a 6-month review process for a major grant funded by NHMRC. She convened a meeting of the Executive of NITRO-Oceania (Network of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Organisations – Oceania) and attended a meeting of the Future Earth Australia Steering Committee.
