Biography

A/Prof Shadbolt is currently working with the Health Data Analytics Team within the College of Health and Medicine at the Australian National University after recently retiring from an executive position with the ACT Health Directorate as the head of the Centre for Health and Medical Research.

From a health service perspective, A/Prof Shadbolt ran the aged care assessment clinical trial for Australia to determine the best aged care assessment model to implement.  Most recently, he has taken up a consultancy to evaluate nurse/midwife-to-patient ratios implementation in the Australian Capital Territory.

A/Prof Shadbolt has built a somewhat unique approach collaborating with teams across multiple medical, health specialties, non-health disciplines, institutions and industries, locally, nationally and internationally, focusing on impact to generate measurable outcome improvements, service cost savings, fund raising and intellectual property. He has a long history of research and consultancies in patient-reported outcome measures, most recently publishing on the Period ImPact and Pain Assessment (PIPPA) tool to screen for menstrual dysfunction. PIPPA is the recommended tool for screening as part of the Endometriosis National Action Plan.

His expertise in clinical trials is quite extensive, having been a consultant to a number of pharmaceutical companies and designed and led a number of investigator-led trials across Australia and internationally. For example, the CICADA trial was on the front cover of Archives of Childhood Diseases and has become an internationally adopted method to wean pre-term babies off CPAP. And his clinical trials research on Mannitol and Bronchitol, leading medications in asthma diagnosis and cystic fibrosis management.

He has over 130 peer reviewed publications from research conducted across a variety of clinical specialties, phases of research, health services and population health. The clinical specialties he’s published include neonatology, orthopaedics, surgery, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, oncology, rheumatology, endocrinology, pathology, haematology, mental health, women’s health, ageing, sports medicine, health outcomes management, knowledge translation, and well-being.
