About
Sumonkanti Das completed his PhD in Statistics from the University of Wollongong, specializing in small area estimation (SAE) with a focus on robust poverty mapping. After his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University, contributing to joint projects with Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on multilevel time series modelling for small domains of the Dutch population.
Since 2021, he has been a Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). At the School of Demography, he worked on estimating smoking prevalence in disaggregated domains under an NHMRC Idea Grant. He later worked on an ARC Linkage Project on surveillance and sampling to maintain the absence of pests and diseases in the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (July 2023–December 2025), and continues this work at NCEPH, alongside teaching two statistics courses there in a casual role. He has also been involved with the ANU Statistical Support Network as a Course Coordinator.
Before joining ANU, he was a faculty member in the Department of Statistics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh. His research interests include applying small area estimation in population health, nutrition, demography, and poverty, with expertise in multilevel modelling of complex survey data.
