Assessing the risk of Salmonella associated with importation of beef

As part of a review of biosecurity risks for the import of beef to Australia, this project assesses the risks associated with Salmonella serotype Typhimurium DT104. S. Typhimurium DT104 isolates are often resistant to antimicrobials, and a US study showed higher rates of hospitalisation in individuals infected with this subtype compared to individuals infected with strains susceptible to antimicrobials. This project will assess and model the probability that importation of beef could lead to introduction and establishment of S. Typhimurium DT104 in Australia. The project is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and is conducted in collaboration with the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture.
