About
We estimate that in 2010 there were 15.9 million cases of gastroenteritis in Australia, around 25% of which were due to contaminated food. This project updates these estimates to the present day, and estimates the economic costs of these illness in dollar terms and in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) lost. The project will explicitly cost high-incidence and severe pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Listeria monocytogene. Funding for this work was provided by Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the New South Wales Food Authority, and the Commonwealth Department of Health.
