About

The DAnCE project is a randomised controlled trial of 400 older adults currently underway that examines whether a social dancing program can prevent falls in older adults. Cognition is a secondary outcome.

The project is led by the University of Western Sydney and involves investigators from the Australian National University and the University of Sydney. Dancing is a complex activity that simultaneously engages strength and coordination, social and emotional activity, sensory function, as well as cognition. Recent small studies suggest that risk of falls in older adults is reduced after engaging in dance.

This study is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council  and if successful, it will provide an evidence-based, accessible and enjoyable method for preventing falls in late life.
