Until recently, Australia has been limited to reporting socioeconomic inequaliteis in mortality in relation to area-level measures of socioeconomic position, a method known to underestimate the extent of the inequality. Newly available data are now available to measure inequalities using individual measures, resulting in more accurate estimates.
