About

In 2017, The Australian National University (ANU) launched the Grand Challenges Scheme, to invest in innovative scientific programs aimed at addressing major challenges of global significance.

Our Health in Our Hands is the first ANU Grand Challenge, founded by a diverse team of scientists and clinicians working closely with individuals affected by chronic conditions—particularly multiple sclerosis and diabetes—to tackle barriers to the introduction of personalised medicine

The Patient Experience and Implementation Group of this inaugural ANU Grand Challenge project is committed to embedding the community of people with MS and Type 1 diabetes, their carers and health care providers into this project from beginning to end.

MS Research collaboration toolkit

This toolkit proudly forms part of the Our Health in Our Hands strategic initiative, made possible by generous support from MS Research Australia. Whether you are a person living with MS, or a person researching MS, the toolkit is designed to help you understand the perspectives of your collaborators, to work together effectively.

Researching Together

Watch our filmed conversations between people living with MS and researchers.

  • TIME
The value of time takes on new meaning when you are diagnosed with a chronic disease.

  • RISK
From day-to-day risks, such as a fall, to long term assessment of treatment risk versus
reward, people living with MS actively manage these decisions.

  • KNOWLEDGE
It is important to link the lived experience of people with MS to medical research.

  • GOALS
Keeping expectations realistic when it comes to finding a cure and the importance of the
    scientific process in this effort.

  • CONSENT
People and technology change over time and consent to any research project should be
    an ongoing and respectful conversation.

  • WHAT WOULD YOU SAY to MS researchers?
The importance of the lived experience, and the difficult decisions.
